Pharmion dives into Mission Bay’s suddenly crowded pool

Mission Bay’s growing life science cluster has scored its fourth private biotech firm, with Boulder, Colo.-based Pharmion Corp. agreeing to move into the Alexandria Real Estate Equities-owned building at 1700 Owens St.
Pharmion, a profitable publicly traded company with net sales of $236 million in 2006, will move its clinical research division to the site and take half of the second floor, approximately 17,100 square feet.
The deal nearly completes the leasing of 1700 Owens St., a speculative 155,000-square-foot research building Alexandria completed in late 2006. The building’s anchor tenant is Sirna Therapeutics, which leases about 67,000 square feet. In addition, three life science venture capital companies — Versant Ventures, Novo Ventures, and Arch Venture Partners — have opened offices there.
Between 50 and 70 Pharmion researchers will eventually be housed in the facility.
Broker Mary Hines of Cresa Partners, who represented Pharmion, said Mission Bay is quickly becoming an alternative to tight South San Francisco, where vacancy rates are below 5 percent and Genentech and Amgen dominate the market.
Deputy Chief of Staff Jesse Blout, who directs Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Office of Workforce and Economic Development, called Pharmion “a great addition.”
“It’s another indication that Mission Bay is the place to be for innovative growing biotech companies,” he said. “Mission Bay is coming alive before our eyes.”
